Hart’s War

Hart's War
Hart’s War (2002)

IMDB rating: 6.20

Plot: Shortly before the end of World War II, young, bright-eyed, First-Lieutenant Thomas Hart, a third-generation desk-warrior, is stationed in an office miles away from any fighting. He meets the war only by accident and is taken prisoner. During interrogation, Hart faces a test of honor, courage, and sacrifice he had not prepared for. Surviving the interrogation, the horrified Hart witnesses courage and honor in the acts of his fellow-prisoners, who save him from certain death by sacrificing their belongings and even their own lives. At the POW camp, Hart learns that courage, sacrifice, and honor are much harder to find, as men become embittered in their captivity. Instead, fraternization, opportunism, and racism abound, ever-encouraged by the murderous Nazis, lead by a grounded Luftwaffe colonel; and mostly tolerated by the senior-ranking American colonel, in spite of his being a 4th-generation military offcer. Col. McNamara, mostly indifferent to the goings-on of his Americans, defiantly draws the line at racism, saluting even the Russian “Untermenschen” in the neighboring compound. But this line becomes much less distinct as two downed African-American pilots join him in the American compound. Suddenly, American racism manifests itself and escalates until one of the pilots is murdered, and the other is accused of murdering one of the racist conspirators. A law-student before the war, Hart is appointed by McNamara to “defend” the court-marshalled pilot, where Hart learns that McNamara has taken great pains to guarantee a verdict of “guilty” against the lone African-American. For many prisoners, the war would be over. For Hart, it has barely begun, as he fights to find within himself the courage and honor that seems to be completely lost within the camp, and only to be had among the dead and the condemned.

WW2 – Did Italy pose a threat to the United Kingdom or the United States?
June 10th 1940 – Italy declares war on the UK
December 11th 1941 – Italy declares war on the USA

But did Italy pose an invasion threat or could Italy launch aerial attacks on these countries?

- Italy could never constitute a threat to either of these two nations:
During the Battle of Britain (Operation Sea Lion) were sent by Mussolini to bomb England of inadequate BR 20 bombers, escorted by the ridiculous biplanes Fiar CR 42.
In the desert between Libya and Egypt, the Italians took only a few pieces of desert at Sallum and Sidi Barrani and then were swept away by the British offensive.
Rim of ‘Ethiopia, after the initial capture of Kassala in Sudan and in Berbera in Somaliland. the Italians were subjected to the attack by the British and after a valiant initial resistance were defeated at Keren and Amba Alagi.
In the Mediterranean, the Italian fleet never attacks Malta, but was attacked by the English fleet at Taranto, where they were sunk 3 Italian battleships and Cape Matapan, where the Italians lost three heavy cruisers

The only success of the Italians in the Mediterranean was when human torpedo (nicknamed pigs) Alexandria attacked and damaged two British battleships Valiant and Qeen Elisabeth
Americans, found themselves with Operation Torch in Tunisia for the first time the Italians and not worry about it much.
Upon landing in Sicily, the Americans had some damage only from the Motorized Division Livorno, who attacked very well in depth, to the beaches of the landing, but then was badly damaged by fire against the coast of the big guns of the allied ships

The Historian, is back!… | Feb 03, 2010

Italy was a military joke. It barely conquered Ethiopia, and had trouble beating Greece although having more than three times the population. It declared war because it was required by its treaty of alliance with Germany. Its main contribution to the war was nuisance value and providing a staging ground for German assaults in North Africa and in the Mediterranean.
tham153 | Feb 03, 2010

Italy could potentially pose a threat to British colonies in Northern Africa and wreak havoc on shipping through Suez. However, their army lacked competent management and their industry was not barely strong enough to produce the quality and amount of armaments it would require.

Italy posed no real threat to the US, but this seems more to be a political move. Germany did not pose an imminent threat to the US either when it joined Japan in a declaration of war.
SPLENDED! | Feb 03, 2010

Italy was a military joke. But, Italy’s campaigns in Ethiopia and in Northern Africa ‘posed a threat’ to oil shipping lanes in the Mediterranean, Suez, and the Red Sea, as well as a threat to the supplies in the Middle East. Italy’s military campaigns were also implicitly backed by the formidable German war machine. Churchill and Stalin perceived the Axis threat to Mideast oil to be so grave that their countries essentially occupied/conquered Persia/Iran during WW2.
W.C. Felcher | Feb 03, 2010

Well, Italy was mainly focused on North Africa. If the Germans had invaded Britain, though, Italians would have joined in the fighting as well. Italy really wasn’t a super major power in WWII. Think of it as Australia, but on the Axis. They were a major force on one front (Pacific for Aussies and Africa for Italians) and a minor one on the other (Europe for both.) So alone, no the Italians couldn’t have invaded either country. They declared war because Germany was at war with them.

Julius Caesar – DivX Version (Normal Quality), iPod/iPhone Version

Julius CaesarJulius Caesar (2002)

IMDB rating: 6.60

Plot: The story of the rise and fall of the Roman Emperor Gaius Julius Caesar, born July 13, 100 B.C., and starting his career as a young Roman with visions of greatness for the Eternal City. When Sulla conquers Rome with his troops, Caesar is one of the very few to stand up against the despotic dictator. This impresses Pompeius, Sulla’s general, and he protects the young man, who is a nephew of Marius, a well known veteran, against the wrath of Sulla. After Sulla’s death, Caesar returns from exile and starts his political career. Caesar’s daughter Julia marries general and senator Pompeius, and Caesar takes Pompeius’ troops in order to simply safeguard the borders to Gaul, but instead conquers the whole country. His final victory takes place at the fortress of Alesia, where the Germanic troops under Vercingetorix capitulate. Back in Rome, Ceasar is not trusted anymore, since the troops are loyal to him alone and it is feared by Pompeius and Cato that he will use the troops to conquer Rome and declare himself King, including the establishing of a inheritbale right to the throne. Instead, Caesar does none of that and sets off to Egypt in order to ensure a constant delivery of agricultural goods to the Roman Empire. After a glorious return to Rome, his former friends Pompeius and Cato are dead, their deaths blamed on Caesar, and his personal life is in ruins since he could not resist the temptation of beautiful Egyptian empress Cleopatra. Being inveigled and aided by a group of rebellious and untrusting senators around Cassius, his nephew Brutus finally kills Julius Caesar at March 15, 44. B.C. (the Ides of March) at the age of 55, starting an era of civil wars.

what is meant by, "An institution is the lengthened shadow of one man" by emerson?

I take it to mean that an education is the key to intellectual growth.

Not all are intellects.
All except one are followers.

This is justified here in this document:
http://the.secret.angelfire.com/intellig ence.pdf (caution: it is strongly worded)

People finally made the conclusion – prostitutes are more intelligent than the highly paid university professors.
Are you a King of Justice? | Nov 18, 2009

An institution is a human organization, which has a mission and a source of resources.

Humans workers require salaries, the organization may require physical space and utilities, among other things. Those items cost money. At one point of the past, the group needed to make arrangements to set this money flow. This means to convince others that the mission is worthy. This is more difficult than it sounds. Any idiot may come with a reasoning to justify getting money from others. There are many worthy causes competing with each other for very limited resources, and many are never executed in practice. Very, very few actually are implanted.

To come up with an idea for and institution, to get resources, to set it up in the real world, to keep it running over time, all of this and more, takes very rare skill, the kind you hear about, but do not expect to see in your lifetime. This kind of skill is not associated with ordinary men, but with great men. That is why Emerson said "An institution is the lengthened shadow of one man." The effect of this great man efffort is very clearly seen even if the great man is no longer around.

What is a sad song for a photo essay on Kokoda?
Hi, I have to create a photo essay of the Kokoda Campaign for my history class and I need a solemn, sad, slow moving song to accompany it. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

If you could slow it down, this would be perfect:
‘Can You Hear Australia’s Heroes Marching?’
It’s our national war memorial song and a tribute to the ANZAC spirit of mateship, courage and sacrifice.
