WW2 – Did Italy pose a threat to the United Kingdom or the United States?
June 10th 1940 – Italy declares war on the UK
December 11th 1941 – Italy declares war on the USA

But did Italy pose an invasion threat or could Italy launch aerial attacks on these countries?

- Italy could never constitute a threat to either of these two nations:
During the Battle of Britain (Operation Sea Lion) were sent by Mussolini to bomb England of inadequate BR 20 bombers, escorted by the ridiculous biplanes Fiar CR 42.
In the desert between Libya and Egypt, the Italians took only a few pieces of desert at Sallum and Sidi Barrani and then were swept away by the British offensive.
Rim of ‘Ethiopia, after the initial capture of Kassala in Sudan and in Berbera in Somaliland. the Italians were subjected to the attack by the British and after a valiant initial resistance were defeated at Keren and Amba Alagi.
In the Mediterranean, the Italian fleet never attacks Malta, but was attacked by the English fleet at Taranto, where they were sunk 3 Italian battleships and Cape Matapan, where the Italians lost three heavy cruisers

The only success of the Italians in the Mediterranean was when human torpedo (nicknamed pigs) Alexandria attacked and damaged two British battleships Valiant and Qeen Elisabeth
Americans, found themselves with Operation Torch in Tunisia for the first time the Italians and not worry about it much.
Upon landing in Sicily, the Americans had some damage only from the Motorized Division Livorno, who attacked very well in depth, to the beaches of the landing, but then was badly damaged by fire against the coast of the big guns of the allied ships

Italy was a military joke. It barely conquered Ethiopia, and had trouble beating Greece although having more than three times the population. It declared war because it was required by its treaty of alliance with Germany. Its main contribution to the war was nuisance value and providing a staging ground for German assaults in North Africa and in the Mediterranean.

Italy could potentially pose a threat to British colonies in Northern Africa and wreak havoc on shipping through Suez. However, their army lacked competent management and their industry was not barely strong enough to produce the quality and amount of armaments it would require.

Italy posed no real threat to the US, but this seems more to be a political move. Germany did not pose an imminent threat to the US either when it joined Japan in a declaration of war.

Italy was a military joke. But, Italy’s campaigns in Ethiopia and in Northern Africa ‘posed a threat’ to oil shipping lanes in the Mediterranean, Suez, and the Red Sea, as well as a threat to the supplies in the Middle East. Italy’s military campaigns were also implicitly backed by the formidable German war machine. Churchill and Stalin perceived the Axis threat to Mideast oil to be so grave that their countries essentially occupied/conquered Persia/Iran during WW2.

Well, Italy was mainly focused on North Africa. If the Germans had invaded Britain, though, Italians would have joined in the fighting as well. Italy really wasn’t a super major power in WWII. Think of it as Australia, but on the Axis. They were a major force on one front (Pacific for Aussies and Africa for Italians) and a minor one on the other (Europe for both.) So alone, no the Italians couldn’t have invaded either country. They declared war because Germany was at war with them.
