Dinosaur soft-tissue or Bio-film?
So, I’ve been reading something that has been kind of puzzling me. Back in the early 90’s Mary Schweitzer and her team paleontologists found a femur of a T-Rex that appeared to have soft tissue still connected. The team did their tests and found it to be about 68 million years old, and amino-acid sequencing showed the tissue to be a match to that of chickens (I think). Her team said that this shows more proof chickens and dinosaurs are a very close ancestor. The problem with this discovery, is that 68 million year old bones don’t have any tissue left. I read somewhere that the oldest bone found to contain tissue was around 1 million years old. Anyways, the scientific community shunned this discovery, nearly black listed her, and some big-wig paleontologist even told her they would never accept any of her data in the future. She eventually got her name back and after many years it has been accepted that the soft tissue is indeed collagen.

Recently, a theory has been brought up that the collagen could very well be a kind of bio-film. It has been compared to the film that grows on our teeth after a nights sleep, or a bucket left out in the rain for a week. The theory was researched by looking under the micro-scope at the collagen cells and cells of bio-films. They look very similar.

This is the problem I am having. Whichever is the true outcome, it could pose a huge problem with two important things. If the stuff found in the bones is indeed collagen, then that would present huge problems to the time-line of dinosaur existence.

If it is not collagen, but bio-film, that would present a huge problem in how DNA is examined.

I am not a biologist or a paleontologist, so I figured I may get some insight here. Thanks.

Tips for running away?
Let’s get this over with: Clearly i’m doing it to piss off my mother.
Have you ran away before?
Where did you go? (ex. friends house/a different city/state?)
How long did you run away for?
Did you bring your cellphone?
Did you bring someone else?
Why did you run away?
Was it worth it?
On a scale from 1/10 (10 being the highest) how awkward was it for you to come home?
How many people knew about it?
Did anyone rat on you?
How much money (if any) did you bring?
Any extra info?

Anyone who says "don’t run away"
"it’s a bad idea"
whatever will be thumbs down and have no possible way of
getting best answer. If you plan on writing that don’t bother! :)
If you haven’t ran away, don’t bother.

i ran away down the road stayed at friends for 5 days
yes i brung cell
nobody ratted me out
no money
probably my whole family knew bout it
and no it wasnt worth it lol

Do not put yourself in a bad situation such as staying on the street or with someone you do not know too well or this will backfire. Stay where safe, and because your a girl (not being sexist its just most girls arent as strong physically as guys) bring a cellphone for emergencies

Run Away and then tell us how it went when you get back…Make sure you bring some cardboard for your new home and sign.
ALISON | Oct 28, 2009

No, I’ve never ran away before but I’ve always wanted to, especially when my mom pisses me off. The reason I wouldn’t is that I don’t wanna see my face in newspapers, and in the news, and on milk cartons…

But you should stay with a close friend, for about 3 days, and run away at night. Make sure your friend knows how to keep a secret or is trustworthy. If you don’t have any friends you can stay with, stay at a local park for about 2 days, and pack some food from home. (But make sure you run away at nighttime, please!)

Don’t let anyone know your running away, because someone is going to snitch eventually, and if your running away for about 1-3 days bring at least 10-20 dollars with you.

In the long run, I bet it wouldn’t be worth it, but if it makes you feel better, do it. (not that I’m enforcing it)

Don’t leave the city/state… that would be too dramatic :)
It may not be best to bring someone else unless they wanna run away to because they wanna piss their parents off, because you don’t wanna get them in trouble, when you get in trouble.

Your mom might call the cops and they can track you by your cell phone, so I wouldn’t suggest you bring your cellphone.

i ran away
i went to a friends house then hid in the dog house in my backyard
i was only gone about 8 hrs
i didn’t bring a phone or anyone else
i honestly dont know why i did it but i was mad
no not worth it at all
prolly a 8.
all i brought was a backpack w/ snacks and a jacket

it was stupid because nobody even knew i was gone they thought i was still in my room. nobody even cared to check on me. so i felt like crap. one thing i did learn was when you run away and are alone you really think about everything w/ no interuptions its kinda peaceful
One In A Million | Oct 28, 2009

Have you ran away before? 5 times

Where did you go? Not to far !

How long did you run away for? Not that long, always got caught by the cops

Did you bring your cellphone? They have GPS, and the cops can track it.

Did you bring someone else? Yes
Why did you run away? Family Issues

Was it worth it? Never.

On a scale from 1/10 (10 being the highest) how awkward was it for you to come home? 10

How many people knew about it? A lot.

Did anyone rat on you? No

How much money (if any) did you bring? None.

Any extra info? If you really want to piss off your mom, do something else rather than run away. Get suspended at school. Or just don’t do as your told at home.
Zoe | Oct 28, 2009

yes not that long ago really and i did it to annoy my mother too :)
my friends house an it was like a 10 minute drive away.
4 days it would have been longer but i didn’t wanna outstay my welcome at my friends.
yes i took my phone because i take it everywhere.
no it was just me but i had my friend there for me.
because i really needed a break from my mother, if i didn’t go id probably be in care or a secure unit right now.
yes even though i still fight with my mother it give me a break and helped the stress on both of us.
about 5/10 it was a little awkward but not much, i didn’t really talk to my mother when i got home i just went to my room.
my friends family and that was it.
nobody did.
i had like ?30 with me but i didn’t need it really.

if you dont want to tell your mother to know where you are then just tell a family member to tell her your safe and you dont want to be bothered.

DONT ever stay with someone you dont really know and trust, my friend did that and it didnt end nicely.

if you want thing to get better then tell your other your not coming home unless things change

hope i helped :)

Who has read books of Agatha Christie?
In the book "Death on the Nile" Hercules Poirot mentions that the most brilliant crime and one of the most difficult that he has had to solve was not planned but made by impulse. In that book this case appears?

Thanks you

It is a device used by many mystery writers to refer to cases they’ve not written.

The idea is to make the detective look more interesting, mysterious, and well-rounded.

You won’t find those books named.

Conan Doyle did that when Sherlock Holmes would mention the case of The Giant Rat of Sumatra–which was never written by him.

Other writers wrote such a story; they’re called pastiches.

Top 10 Most Striking/Memorable/Iconic Movie Villains of All-Time?
This list isn’t of the most popular or most evil or scariest villains of all-time; it is a list of the characters and performances that blew me away. These actors and characters all had scenes that will stay with me for the rest of my life. I know I’m leaving a lot off of here, but, as I said, this is more about the performances and the scenes than about popularity. So, no Darth Vadar and no Freddy and no Jigsaw.

I’d like to compare mine with your top 10’s…

10. John Doe (Kevin Spacey): Seven – Not actually in the movie very much, but very very effective and creepy.

9. Mr. Blonde (Michael Madsen): Reservoir Dogs – One of the most memorable torture scenes in cinema history. Movies like Saw and Hostel are certainly more disgusting, but the "Stuck in the Middle with You" scene was abolutely amazing without having to go over-the-top shocking.

8. Anton Chigurh (Javier Bardem): No Country for Old Men – An amazing transformation for this actor to make.

7. Pennywise (Tim Curry): It – Made an entire generation totally afraid of clowns.

6. Max Cady (Robert DeNiro): Cape Fear – Had trouble deciding between Meatchem and DeNiro, but in the end DeNiro won out.

5. Annie Wilkes (Kathy Bates): Misery – Sledgehammer anyone?

4. Jack Torrance (Jack Nicholson): The Shining – The best depiction of a slow descent into insanity in cinema history.

3. Kaizer Soze/Verbal Kint (Kevin Spacey): The Usual Suspects – One of the best movie endings of all time.

2. The Joker (Heath Ledger): The Dark Knight – The thing that made it so impressive is that not once during the movie did you stop and say "Ok, that’s Heath Ledger." His transformation was incredible.

1. Hannibal Lector (Anthony Hopkins): Silence of the Lambs – Seriously, has there ever been a creepier villain?

Joan Crawford (Faye Dunaway): Mommy Dearest – "No Wire Hangers!!!" My God.

Dang I hate when that happens. Give it to the dogs.
Umm….ok | Nov 27, 2032

Just go to the grocery store, they’re about 1.50-2.00, and it’ll only take about 5-10 mins depending on where you live.

But here’s the recipe :

LIGHTNING GRAVY

1 1/2 tablespoons beef, chicken, or pork soup base
1 tablespoon fresh or 1/2 as much dry parsley
1/4 teaspoon black pepper
2 tablespoons Wondra flour
1-2 tablespoons butter
1/2 tablespoon olive oil (or meat drippings)
1/2 teaspoon onion powder (or onion soup mix)
1/4 teaspoon garlic powder (or 2 cloves minced garlic)
1 1/2 cups cold broth or water
1/4 onion, thinly sliced or minced

This is a casual, quick, gravy to help dress up weekday meals. Use it when you don’t have the makings for gravy, or to top mashed potatoes or rice, or even to dress up a store-bought roast chicken.

Feel free to vary quantities as desired. Add more flour for a thicker gravy, or more broth to thin it out. Or try using vegetable broth for a different taste.

Stir all ingredients together in a large pyrex bowl or measuring cup and microwave for 5-7 minutes, stirring occasionally. Let stand until sauce thickens.

Add a pinch of sage to chicken gravy, or a spoon or so of ketchup to beef gravy or tomato sauce for pork gravy.

Cooks Note: If you are able to obtain modified food starch (a form of corn, potato or other vegetable starch which has been precooked) available from restaurant supply stores, this may be substituted for the Wondra flour with good success. Gravies made using modified food starch are cooked in a much shorter period of time than it takes to cook out the raw "floury" taste obtained from using wheat flour when making sauces or gravies.

You can get gravy in the grocery store pre-made in a can. Chicken and Turkey gravy tastes the same.
If you want the real deal, cook up a chicken and use its drippings, add in a chicken boilion cube or 2 and bring it to a boil, stir in cornstarch that you have already mixed with water.

If you would rather another option for your left over turkey why don’t you make a simple turkey soup. Get pre-made Campbell’s chicken broth, chop up some carrots, onion and celery and add in uncooked rice, and parsley. Add in your turkey. Bring it to a boil and reduce heat, let it simmer until rice is cooked.
Sour | Oct 13, 2009

If you don’t have any gravy left you can do 1 of 3 things. 1. You can make the gravy. 2. You can buy the gravy or 3. You can take the turkey and make sandwiches with it. Hope this answers your question or gives you ideas.

1 c cold water 1 tbsp (1 cube) Knor chicken bullion mix well
and bring to a slow boil
one slice of turkey shredded for fiber and some flavor
also some diced onion and – - ? ? and Kitchen Bouquet (carmel for color)
use a slow boil add water to thin salt and pepper to taste
The store has small packets of turkey gravy as well as canned
just ask the staff

Will the Navy accept college credits?

I have a GED and I plan on going to school to get my 15 college credits to be considered a Tier-1 for the Navy. But I read that if I have 24 semester hours I can get an advancement to an E-2. So will that be a completely different set of credits or will it be added to my 15?

It would be added to your 15.

the only problem is, im not sure if GED applicants are eligible under the same standards. You can always email a recruiter and ask the exact standards for GED applicants if you don’t get anything on here.
Andrea | Nov 11, 2009

You would need a total of 24 for rapid advancement. Here, some info to read:

you would have to have 24 ON TOP OF the 15 needed to get in with a GED.. so a total of 39 credits.

the first 15 are used to make you eligible to enlist period.. then you would need another 24 to get E2.

what cars are recalled coz floor matt except Toyota and lexus?

Lexus and Toyota were the only brands recalled because of it. And it was only the cheaper Lexus models, such as the IS and the ES.

If your vehicle has two small clips that hold the floor mat back from slipping and hitting the accelerator, you’re ok. If it doesn’t, contact you’re dealer and see what to do, or just take the mat out.

If your mat does slip and it hits the accelerator, try to dislodge the mat from the pedal, or steadily press on the brake and pull over, park, and remove the matt from the driver’s side.

How great would it be if the last-gen game consoles could go portable?
I’ve had a pretty interesting night that went from watching half of Resident Evil: Degeneration, to wikiing the games and the movies, to finding out that the original resident evil was released on the DS last year, to looking up prototypes of portable game machines made to play the games of the first half of this incredible decade! Here’s some stuff I found

http://palmps2.com/palmps2/index.html — one of the few portable PS2 prototypes people built that I thought was the most kickass of the bunch.

http://www.weblogsinc.com/common/images/ 0399631295330486.JPG?0.9588080630854161 — a portable GC. Makes sense right? because the disks are small!!

Xbox portable? well, there are prototypes of a possible portable system Microsoft may make that’d compete with the DS and the PSP, but no-one seems to care about actually being able to play the console games on the rode. Let’s face it, Microsoft did pretty miserably with its original Xbox comparing to its competition.

But anyway, I thought, man that would be so cool!!! Now that everyone is slowly getting used to the newer generation with the motion control and the 1080i graphics, those last-gen consoles are just looking a bit ugly on your large HDTV screen.

So what do I want, you ask? Well I want Nintendo and Sony to do something about it! Give it a shot, create the devices and sell a few just to see if anybody buys it. I mean, just because portable devices are getting smaller and slimmer doesn’t mean a true gamer wouldn’t give money for his/her fave console of the near past made portable! All these babies need is some hard-drive memory for DLC (say both from older generations like PSone and N64), Wi-Fi so people could play against each other or go online wirelessly, and in Nintendo’s case, maybe figure out a way to make it a transformable part-DS lite part-GameCube device so you could play an entire decade of great Nintendo games.

one concern though…

HOW THE HECK DO YOU MAKE THIS DREAM INTO A REALITY??!!!

Sony’s announcement of the PlayStation 3 Slim on Tuesday was no surprise for most gamers and industry experts. Parts that once cost a small fortune, such as hard drives, processors, and special disc-reading lenses, continue to fall in price and take up less space. It’s only natural the machines that use them would shrink as well.

The PlayStation 3 was physically the largest of the three current-generation home consoles, followed by Microsoft’s Xbox 360 and Nintendo’s Wii. With never-ending lust by consumers for smaller gadgets, the current configuration was just not cutting it.

What’s surprising about the Slim, though, is that Sony was the second-most recent of the three companies to have released its console, yet it’s the first to offer a completely new form factor. Microsoft was the first out of the gate with a North America release of the Xbox 360 in late November 2005. Sony and Nintendo followed suit with the PlayStation 3 and Wii, respectively, which were released a week apart from each other in mid-November 2006.

The closest either Nintendo or Microsoft has come to a redesign since is Microsoft, which began including an HDMI port and increasing the included storage, alongside a major revision to the system software which allowed games to be played off the hard drive.

In the case

If you have a lot of money (probably something like $1000 or maybe more; I’m not sure), you could probably ask a modder like Ben Heck to custom make one for you.
Here’s his site: http://benheck.com/
The thing is, major companies would never release old consoles as portables. It’s because they make their money primarily from software (which for an old console is all second hand – meaning they don’t get a cent). It would also compete with the new systems like DS and PSP that they are making a killing off.
Plus, R&D isn’t cheap…

And while I’m at it, you can hack a PSP to play any PSOne, SNES, NES, Genesis/Mega Drive, Master System, TG16, etc. etc. game that you want (pretty much).
